Meet DJ New Era! I had the privilege of doing a blog interview with DJ New Era and his candid responses offered not only an insight to the industry but he shed light into what it takes to make it a successful career.

Where are you originally from?
DJ New Era: I'm originally from Montgomery, AL raised half my life in Cleveland, Ohio & the rest in Birmingham, AL
How long have you had the love for music?
DJ New Era: I've had a love for music i wanna say around the age of 8 the 1st album i ever purchased was the Wu-Tang Clan - Forever(Double Disc) I remember my parents didn't allow me to listen to the dirty version so we post most of our music from Wal-Mart.
When did you decide to become a DJ?
DJ New Era: I wanted to become a Dj around my Junior year of college. I had a huge collection of Cds an it went from selling Cds to becoming a Dj.
What obstacles did you first face on your way to becoming the DJ that you are now
DJ New Era: I faced rejection a lot on this journey hell i still face rejection but its only made me more focused and humble.
Is this a very competitive industry? Explain yes or no answers.
DJ New Era: Yes this industry is very competitive. Technology is always changing and its always an up incoming Dj that wants your spot. Djs under cutting your prices
just to get ahead.
How long did it take you to perfect the art of being a DJ?
DJ New Era: It took me around 4 years. I learn something new every week about the crate. When you become a Dj you never stop learning.
Have you ever found yourself nervous at a venue? If yes, when, where and why
DJ New Era: To be real I find myself nervous just about every time I Dj. Mainly when i have a big event (Concert or a major college party)
The pressure is always on you to bring your best. You have 1000s of people from all over to please but being nervous only makes you better Dj.
How do you generally promote your services?
DJ New Era: I promoter heavy on all social media sites. My strongest site is Instagram.
What advice that was the most useful did you receive during your career and from whom?
DJ New Era: Networking is your advantage in this business. The more people see you the better chance you have at building a relationship.
Have you, do you currently or will you mentor in the future?
DJ New Era: I've had some djs i looked up to but once i met them in person some turned out to be either assholes or hollywood.
I just focus on being a mentor to myself I push myself along with God.
Do you have a preference of any genre in music and if so which one and if not why?
DJ New Era: I don't really have a preference I prefer to learn it all because it helps in being a all around Dj.
Do you consider being a DJ a career that is in demand?
DJ New Era: I would say its a career that is in high demand. Its always something new popping up and it involves music.
What was the lowest point of your career?
DJ New Era: The lowest point was when i left FM radio to go too a digital radio station. The funding stopped for the digital station and i was out of a job!
How did you survive and fight through it?
DJ New Era: I just kept a positive attitude an continued to trust my God an knew that it was only a minor setback for something better. I've learned that in order to be successful in this career you have to take some risk to put you in better situations.
As a DJ, Do you travel and to what locations?
DJ New Era: Yes i travel. I've been to Texas, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Florida, Cleveland & Mississippi
What has been your support system?
DJ New Era: My biggest support system has been GOD!

In your line of work, have you ever found yourself star struck? And who was it?
DJ New Era: Yes!! It was the time i met Sway!! he then in return interviewed me on his show. It was truly a blessing.
Do you love what you do and if so, what makes you love it?
DJ New Era: I can honestly say i love what I do. I love to wake up in the morning knowing i have a career doing what I'm passionate about. I love when kids walk up to me asking me my story.
What city are you currently in? And where can people find you out doing your thing?
DJ New Era: I'm currently in Birmingham, AL. You just have to check my Instagram because my dates change from time to time.
What is your ultimate dream and goal as far as your career?
DJ New Era: My dream goal is to have my own radio show which is syndicated in 20-30 different states.
Can you see a shift in today's music? If so, is it going in a good direction?
DJ New Era: The shift has already happened. I wanna say when the amigos dropped they had a huge reaction to how the music sounds today. The direction is good because you have a lot of young rappers making careers off the new sound.
Finally, what piece of advice can you give to the young people or anyone that wants to advance in the entertainment industry as a DJ?
DJ New Era: Network network network and stay humble always give back and help others. Thats key to winning.
